ADOPTION INFORMATION

Anyone interested in adopting an animal from the Humane Society of Southern Illinois must first complete a pre-adoption application. If you live in the Southern Illinois area, you will need to come out to our facility to fill out the application. If you are not a resident of Southern Illinois, you can call our shelter at the number provided on the bottom of this page for more information. Once the application has been submitted a shelter employee will go over the application with you (the adopter) to determine if your home is suitable for the animal. There are a number of factors that may or may not contribute to an application being denied.

If your application is approved, the shelter staff will tell you everything that needs to be done in order for an adoption to take place.

Adoption Fees are as follows:

  • Dogs and Puppies: $100.00
  • Cats and Kittens: $80.00
  • Rabbits: $35.00
  • Others vary

Adoption Fees include the following:

  • Microchip
  • Worming
  • Initial Vaccinations (sometimes all vaccinations - ask staff about the status of particular animals)
  • One month free Pet Insurance
  • Free Grooming within 30 days of adoption (Best Grooming by Lana) 529-8218
  • Includes spay/neuter IF the procedure has already been done prior to adoption
The adopted animal will not go home with you the same day it is adopted. We will schedule an appointment at a vet of your choice, providing it is on our list of participating veterinarians.

The animal will need have the following procedures done at the vet's office:

  • spay/neuter (if not already done)
  • heartworm or feline leukemia/FIV test (if required by your veterinarian. All animals have already been tested at least once at the shelter.)
  • rabies vaccination (if not already done)
  • fecal (optional)
  • other procedures may be recommended by your veterinarian

You, as the adopter, are responsible for any costs incurred at the veterinarian's office for the above listed procedures, and any medications prescribed by your veterinarian. Your total costs will vary, depending on which animal you are adopting and what procedures have already been done, as well as the veterinarian you choose. For instance, a particular dog may already be neutered and completely up-to-date on all vaccinations, so you would not incur those additional costs. However, if the dog or cat you are adopting has not been neutered or given the rabies vaccination yet, then you would have to pay for those procedures at the vet when you pick up your new pet. Be aware that the prices charged for the same procedures vary widely from veterinarian to veterinarian.

The following vaccinations are provided by the Humane Society during the animal's stay at our facility:

  • Dogs are vaccinated for: Distemper, Adenovirus Type 2, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus, Leptospira Bacterin, and Kennel Cough.
  • Puppies are vaccinated for: Distemper, Adenovirus Type 2, Coronavirus, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus, and Kennel Cough.
  • Cats and Kittens are vaccinated for: Feline Rhinotracheitis, Calici, Panleukopenia, and Chlamydia.
  • Most of our cats and dogs are already up to date on rabies vaccinations as well as the above vaccines.

All canines are on heartworm preventative. Dogs and Cats also receive Frontline or Advantage for flea and tick prevention.
