Lost and Found Animals
What to do if you are Missing an Animal
-
Check with your neighbors or houses within a 5 mile radius where the animal was last seen.
-
Call the Humane Society at (618) 457-2362 to leave a lost animal report. It is very important to call us as soon as possible, preferably the same day the animal has gone missing.
-
Call local newspapers and leave a lost report with them.
-
Check found animal reports in local newspapers daily.
-
Post flyers with a description of the missing animal around the area where the animal was last seen.
-
-
Check with area veterinarians to see if they have had any injured or stray animals brought to them.
-
Come out to the Humane Society with a current color photograph of the animal you are missing.
-
Check
Petfinder.com where you can look through a national database or even post a picture and report of a lost or found animal.
-
IMPORTANT: We receive stray animals from several different towns and counties in Southern Illinois. We hold our stray animals for 7 days before considering them for adoption. Because we have a limited amount of space in our adoption program, we are unable to keep every animal that our shelter receives.
- It is very important to keep current identification on your animal at all times. If you have recently moved, call your veterinarian and update your address and phone number.
- 95% of animals that are found or are brought to the Humane Society with a current I.D. tag/Rabies tag or microchip will make it back home to their family.
- 90% of animals that are found or brought to the Humane Society without any identification never make it back to their homes.
